Welcome to the Coastal Commons Research, Inc.

We are based in Albion, California. In 2014, we decided to close the Coastal Land Trust and distribute our properties to other land trusts. The projects you see below are still protected, but have other owners. Seaside Beach and Meadow are now owned by the Mendocino Land Trust and Enchanted Meadow Wetlands Sanctuary is now owned by the Friends of Enchanted Meadow. We sincerely thank all our contributors, and hope that you will continue to support your favorite lands by contributing to their new owners.

Here you will find descriptions of our many projects, our mission and goals, our partners, and ways that you can help. Our motto is “to preserve and cherish natural land” and you’ll get to see photos of the beautiful places we strive to protect and enhance.

Active Projects

CoLT has completed three final projects: Seaside Beach, Westport Trails, and Enchanted Meadow Wetlands Sanctuary. Here’s a little rundown on each, with links to pages containing more information.

Seaside Beach

Seaside is a very popular white sand beach 10 miles north of Fort Bragg. Mendocino Land Trust now owns both the beachfront and the meadow just inland. The beach is open to the public, while the wetland meadow is a wildlife sanctuary. We have several projects on the property; including invasive plants removal, parking improvements, and trails and beach maintenance. An ongoing Seaside Stewards group helps with erosion control, beach cleanup and vegetation restoration. Read more….

Westport Trails

A recent grant from the Mendocino Council of Governments helped us to plan for additional trails — both on- and off-highway — for the area from Usal Road, through Westport, to the Ten Mile River. Visitors and residents who hike, bike, or horseback ride in this area helped us plan through a community charrette process. An emphasis on transportation will plan for connecting the wider community to Westport by non-motorized means for a greener footprint. Read more….

Enchanted Meadow Wetlands Sanctuary

Enchanted Meadow Wetlands Sanctuary is located on the Albion River, four miles from the coast. This 52- acre riverside meadow provides habitat for many species of birds and animals, as well as the endangered coho salmon. The Friends of Enchanted Meadow now own and monitor this beautiful preserve. Read more…
